World Wide Web Searching

Have you ever searched the world wide web in search of services?

Recently we were searching for services in the pest control business on Kelley's Island. What did we find? We found 10 websites that said they did service on Kelley's Island, we also found that only 2 existed and did business as a LLC in the State of Ohio. We think that it is important that you are a tax paying company in order to get our business.

How did we know there were only two?

We searched the State of Ohio business listings: http://www2.sos.state.oh.us/pls/bsqry/f?p=100:1:0:::::

Why did we do this search?

When we want to give our hard earned money to someone, we want to make sure they are legitimate business. A legitimate business supports the state they do business in by registering with their respective state government office. If the business is registered then they are also registered with the federal government. Legitimate businesses will come back when you raise a complaint, and not give you the run around.

So while you are out there searching on the internet, do you homework on a business before your give them your hard earned money. You will be surprised by how many companies on the internet are fake and out to scam you out of your hard earned money!

Garage Upkeep

We get a lot of calls for safety sensor issues. The door won't close, and other conditions.

The first thing you should do if your door will not close is to clean the debris away from the safety sensors, clean all cobwebs away, and try the door again. If the door still will not close then see if one of the sensors is red on the top. If they are both reading correctly there should be a green light showing. If you have a red light you could try to adjust your safety sensor to see the other sensor. There is a wing nut on the top of the sensor, just unscrew the nut and adjust the sensor up or down until you get a green light. Screw the wing nut back on and try the door again. If it still will not go down, then look on your wall button and make sure it is not in the lock mode. The wall button has a lock and unlock button on it that can be pushed to lock the garage door. If this lock button is engaged, simply push the button back to the unlock position. Then try the garage door again, if you are still encountering problems, you should call us.

If you have done all of the above things and your garage door is still not going down, then call us for a service call: 614-877-0350! Our service call is $79, we will check out the entire door, oil and adjust, and diagnose your garage door problems.

Considerations for Buying a New Garage Door!

Buying a garage door for your home can be a tough choice! There are many styles, steel thicknesses, wood variations, and insulation values to choose from.

Here are some questions to ask yourself:
1. What do I want out of my garage door?
2. Is my garage heated and cooled?
3. What is my budget?
4. Do I want steel or wood?
5. What is the maintenance of steel and wood?
6. What color do I want on my home?
7. Do I need a lock?
8. Will I need to upgrade my opener?
9. How do I choose a company to perform the services?
10. Do I want windows in my garage door?

At Grove City Garage Door Inc., we understand that buying a new garage door can be a tough choice. We have many selections to choose from and can help. We will try our best to help over the phone or in person.

If you are just fishing around the internet here are some definitions to help you choose the right garage door for your home:

Insulation: Garage doors come in insulated and non-insulated varieties. There are foam backer inserts for insulation (not recommended), polystyrene, and polyurethane. Polystyrene is the most common of insulation in a garage door (recommended), and polyurethane is a heavier insulation (also recommended). Insulation is a great way to keep your garage at cooler temperatures and warmer temperatures especially if your garage is heated or cooled.

Wood: There are manufacturers of traditional wood door such as Clopay. We are a dealer for Clopay so we can get a wood door at your request. A wood door does require maintenance and may not be within a budget. Wood doors can be expensive and hard to take care of. If you are choosing a wood door, be prepared to stain the wood door every year. A wood door is also heavier and may require a commercial opener with heavy duty springs.

Composite: A composite door is a door that has a steel undercarriage and a wood overlay glued to the outside of the steel to make the door look like wood. A composite door requires less maintenance than a wood door, but still give the look of a wood door.

Steel: A classic steel garage door can come insulated or non-insulated. Steel garage doors also come from the factory painted with your choice of color. Steel garage doors are available in short and long panel, with windows or without and are low maintenance. A steel garage door only requires a once a year adjust and oil to make the garage door operate smoothly from year to year.

Aluminum: An aluminum door is recommended in high humidity and caustic environments, the material is rust proof and corrosion resistant. An aluminum door goes well on a coastal home that is exposed to the elements. You can put in a full view glass panels for a modern look on your home.

Windows: Windows in a garage door can add light to the garage, and a distinctive look to any garage! Windows are also insulated, can be frosted or not frosted, and have many different inserts available for a different look!

Color: Garage doors come in many different colors ranging from a traditional white to a wood look of oak! It is up to you on how you want your home to look: contemporary, modern, or traditional!

Supporting Community

Every year we donate to the Fire Safety Program with Jackson Township Fire Station. This program was developed to get children more knowledge about fire safety. The fire safety program has Safety Town that visits schools and festivals every year. There are also coloring books handed out to the kids as well as certificates for completing safety town. This is a great program that teaches about safety and fires, how to get out of a building safely, and all children should know how to get out of a fire.

Let's Talk Light Bulbs!

Do you know what is the best light bulb to use in your garage door opener?

The best light bulbs are the regular 60-100 watt bulbs. The CFL and LED bulbs greatly reduce the signal strength from the opener to the remote. The remote will not work when it is a distance away, the signal is being reduced from the bulbs in the opener. So if you are having remote issues, then there is a good chance you just need to change your bulbs back to a regular light bulb. The garage door opener does not use that much power from the light bulbs, the opener shuts itself off after a few minute of non use.

Mid-America Garage Door

Not many people have heard about Mid-America Garage Doors. Why you ask? Well Mid-America is located in Ponca City, Oklahoma; so they are not a local company. So why does Grove City Garage Door Inc. sell their doors? We sell their doors because they have outstanding quality. Mid-America offers a different kind of garage door because the thickness of the metal is heavier gauged and will stand up to more accidental abuse. A Mid-America door is thicker metal so that also means that there is more noise reduction.

Mid-America also offers an inexpensive carriage style garage door. Since carriage style garage doors is a growing trend in the garage door market.  Mid-America Garage Doors

Mid-America offers the standard colors: white, almond, grey, sandtone, sahara, and cherry (wood) look on their doors. Check out our page above for more information regarding the varieties of garage doors.

Recent Jobs!

Pictured above is a Clopay short panel garage door with Charleston 508 glass. This door is an insulated garage door. The short panel door with short panel glass is a nice look on a home!

Pictured above is a low cost garage door, the Mid-America Vantage series door! This door is installed for a low price of $895.00! This is an insulated garage door!

Bulk Buying!

We buy in bulk on track, hardware, springs, doors, openers, and weatherstripping! Why do we buy in bulk? Buying in bulk can pass on the savings to customers. We can allocate the bulk purchase across many purchases by customers which then brings the prices of the garage doors, hardware, openers, springs, track, and weatherstripping down to lower prices! Why do we pass on our savings? We pass on our savings to our customers because this sets us apart from everyone else! We offer lower prices to our customers because we want to give our customers the best products in town for lower costs!

Right Equipment for the Job!

Having the right equipment for the job is a very important part of the garage door business. We have all of the right equipment to complete any job big or small! We own all of our equipment from years of learning what is needed and what is not needed. The high lift is used on most large commercial garage doors, it helps with lifting the long heavy garage door panels, getting to high places to reach safely, and gives a larger working space than a ladder. Keeping our employees safely working on the job is an important aspect of being in business. Our employees are just a important as our customers!

Angle Iron, what is it?

What is angle iron and why is it important to your garage door?

Angle iron is used to connect your track and garage door opener to your ceiling. Using the right gauge is important; too light of a gauge and the iron can bend, then your garage door and opener can fall on your car or you!

Pictured above is an opener with angle iron hanging from the ceiling. I used this picture to show where the angle iron is located. However, in this picture the opener is clearly hung wrong. The safety sensors should not be hanging next to the opener! We fixed this opener at one of our service calls.

Thunderstorms and Garage Doors

Do you know that a severe thunderstorm can cause problems with your garage door?

How you ask?

The garage door opener is generally plugged directly into a plug and not a surge protector. The lightning strikes and the electrical current travels. If the garage door opener is not on a surge protector, it can take an electrical surge from a lightning strike and the surge will destroy the board on the inside of the garage door opener.

We recommend having your garage door plugged into a surge protector to keep this from happening. There are some small surge protectors out there that can prevent a surge to your opener.

Another problem with thunderstorms and garage doors is the hail producing storms. The hail can cause damage to the garage door if it takes a direct hit. We have some inexpensive garage doors we can install if your garage door suffers from any hail damage over the next few days. Today, April 8, 2015 there are storms coming into the Columbus, Ohio area that are expected to produce some hail.

How Long Does a Garage Door Opener Last?

Garage door openers can fail for many reasons. The picture above shows three openers, the one on the left is 15 years old, and the two on the right are both 9 years old.

Some things that make and opener fail:
-The garage door is out of adjustment
-Poor quality opener
-Constant use of the garage door

Regardless as to why they fail, they are a maintenance item that needs to be maintained for them to last 12-15 years of use.

We offer a service call to maintain items such as the garage door, opener, springs, rollers, and all integral parts of the garage door. Our service call is fairly inexpensive at just $79.00! Garage door maintenance is key to a long lasting garage door like any other component in your home!

How our Services Work!

Do you call around for pricing to different garage door companies?

Do they give you an estimate over the phone?

When they come to repair your door is the price different than the estimate?

Do you know what is included in a service call?

I can speak for Grove City Garage Door Inc., our service calls start at $79.00.

What does our service call cover? The service call covers us getting to your home, oil and adjusting your garage door, and we will look over the functioning of your garage door. When we are there we can estimate other repairs if necessary, we will fix the problem, and we will give you the exact amount you are expected to pay at the time of service.

Does the $79.00 get absorbed if there is another issue? Yes it does, we will not charge you for a service call and a spring replacement separately. If we come to your house on a service call and figure out it's a bad spring, we will only charge you $140.00 to replace one spring or $220.00 to replace two springs.

If you have one bad spring we will always recommend to have both replaced at the same time. Why? Well when we unwind the one bad spring, we have to unwind both springs. When you unwind the springs and rewind them, there is a chance the good spring left there will break soon and we don't want to come back out in a few weeks to fix the second spring. So we always recommend to replace both at the same time!

Did you recently purchase a garage door opener and want it installed? We offer this service for $125.00 for our labor.

If you didn't purchase a garage door opener and need to purchase one, we can recommend a garage door opener that will fit your budget and your needs. There is a wide variety of garage door openers available. We carry the LiftMaster and Chamberlain brands of garage door openers.

Spring is in the air!

Spring is in the air! We found this nest on top of an opener last week. When you are checking the opener, always unplug the opener before handling. You never know what you might find on top of the opener. We have found nests, mice, cats, and plenty of spiders in openers.

Spring is also the perfect time to replace your garage door! Did your snow plow guy hit your door accidentally this winter? Pictured above is a long panel door with grilles inserts in the windows. We have many doors in stock, just give us a quick call to find out what we have in stock!

Commercial Jobs

Pictures above is the inner workings of a LiftMaster Commercial garage door opener. I know this may be boring to some people, but think about how important this opener is. We have put many of these commercial openers at many different locations such as Police Departments, Fire Stations, Prisons, City of Grove City, City of Columbus, Southwestern City Schools, and many more. These openers operate smoothly and for a number of years. On a Fire Station the first opener to stop working is the medic door because that is the most often used door on a Fire Station.

Pictured above is our commercial lift, we use this lift on all commercial jobs that are higher than a standard ladder can reach. We have invested in all of the equipment to do the job right the first time, we don't need to rent or borrow tools. Having the right tools is an important aspect of getting a job done. What would you think of our expertise if we came to your home and asked to borrow your tools to fix your garage door? That should be a bright RED flag that a person is not a knowledgeable repair person. You cannot fix anything without the right tools!

Multi-Branding of Garage Door Openers

Does the average consumer know what multi-branding is?

Multi-branding is when a corporation gains market space by making multiple brands of the same product. The largest advantage of multi-branding is gaining shelf space at a store. Another advantage of multi-branding is to satisfy the consumer that likes to try different brands. There are consumers out there that swear to a specific brand and will not switch. Do those consumers know that they have possibly purchased from the same organization under a different brand name?

The Chamberlain Group Inc. practices multi-branding by producing Chamberlain, LiftMaster, Craftsman, and True Value garage door openers. You can find Chamberlain brands in most major retail stores along side their other brands. Chamberlain brands are manufactured in the United States, and their largest competitor is Genie.

The Chamberlain brand garage door was established for the do-it-yourself consumer that wants to install their own garage door opener. The LiftMaster brand was established as a commercial brand you can only get from a garage door distributor. All of the Chamberlain brands are internally created equal, so you are getting the same quality from each opener you purchase.

Garage Kitties

Cats and garage doors do not mix well.......

The cats are cute, they need a dry place to stay, but what can they do to your garage?

Cats are naturally climbers, they can and will climb up into your rafters in your garage. The garage door opener is hanging from those rafters in the garage, so what do you think a cat can do to your opener? Mark has found instances of the cats peeing on openers, shorting the wires, and wreaking havoc on a garage door opener. The insides of the garage door opener doesn't consist of much but the motor, the power board, and the light bulbs. There are also wires running from the opener to the safety sensors, and wall buttons if your wall button is not wireless. Cats will sometimes chew on those wires. So your garage door could stop working or work intermittently.

What happens to a cat if the safety sensor are not aligned right or you have an opener made before 1998?

There is a good chance the cat will get crushed under the garage door if your safety sensor are not aligned correctly, are too high off of the ground, or if you have an old garage door opener. The older garage door openers did not have safety sensor on them, and this is one reason why safety sensor were invented. Small animals and children can be harmed by a garage door opener without safety sensors. I don't want to see any small animals or children get hurt from a garage door opener, so I suggest keeping your small animals indoors, having your old garage door opener replaced, and making sure your safety sensors are aligned correctly! Keep those garage kitties safe!

Inside a Large Commercial Door

The picture above is of the Wilson Turf commercial garage door job. We are installing 6-18' x 14' garage doors on this building. The inside track is running along the roof of this garage. These garage doors are like moving walls. The garage doors are insulated doors which make them heavy, so if one of these doors were to be damaged and fall out of the track, it could seriously hurt someone. Is is important when you have a large commercial garage door that you do not run into it with equipment. The equipment can damage the garage door and cause the door to jack knife out of the track to hang above by the cables. However, the picture above is a new installation and we hope we don't have to come back anytime soon to repair these doors.

Garage Door Opener

Let's talk about your garage door opener today! There are many brands out there and at our house we have LiftMaster, Linear, and Chamberlain openers. The LiftMaster belt drive opener is on our main home, we also have LiftMaster on our large commercial doors, as well as Linear and Chamberlain out in our other garages. They are all reliable openers and have been installed for many years, of course the President of Grove City Garage Door lives here so he makes sure our doors are always in good working order! The joy of having your own garage door technician at home! My garage door guy tests out different doors and openers on our own home, so when we recommend something it is because we have used it ourselves!

Mark will recommend the belt drive LiftMaster or Chamberlain garage door openers to residential customers all day long. Theses openers last a long period of time, are reliable, and are quiet. I can tell you from experience that our garage door opener is quiet and you cannot hear it inside the house when the door opens and closes!

Check out some of the stats at our main website: Garage Door Openers

The garage door opener function is to push and pull the garage door up and down the track. The pushing and pulling is made possible by the garage door spring tension lifting the garage door. The light bulbs inside of your garage door opener can also effect the range of your garage door remote. We do not recommend using a CFL or LED light bulb because the range is severely shortened. You can get regular light bulbs at any store. The reason the CFL and LED bulbs shorten the range is because they interfere with the garage door signal. So if you are experiencing a shortened range, check your light bulbs.

We wouldn't put something on your homes we haven't tried ourselves first! I think this is the difference that sets Grove City Garage Door aside from all other garage door companies out there. Even Pat, Mark's brother and his partner, uses LiftMaster products on his own home. So if you have questions or concerns Mark and Pat have lots of experience with these openers and can diagnose your garage door opener problems over the phone. I can attest that Mark has answered many calls on Saturday and Sunday about openers, and helping people reset their remotes over the phone. You just can't get that kind of customer service anywhere! Mark always says he would rather fix it over the phone than charge a person for a service call if he can fix it over the phone!

Best Time to Change Weatherstripping?

Recently we have had some calls regarding the weatherstripping, and when is the best time to change weatherstripping? It is actually best to change the weatherstripping when temperatures are at 50 degrees or above. The reason for this is the bottom weatherstripping is not as flexible at colder temperatures, could be frozen to the door, and breaks apart easily making it harder to get out of the track. The outside weatherstripping should also be changed when the temperatures are above 50 degrees. The outer weatherstripping becomes stiff and hard to work with, it can also crack due to the cold temperatures. So we recommend waiting until spring time to get your weatherstripping replaced.

2. Garage doors can be made of wood, steel, aluminum, copper, glass, vinyl, and fiber-glass!

3. Steel garage doors can be made in many different colors!

4. The garage door opener is not part of the garage door!

5. The garage door springs bear the weight of the garage door, not the opener!

6. The garage door runs up and down on the track!

7. The garage door has hinges, rollers, struts, brackets, cables, and springs!

8. The garage door can have glass in one row of the door or be the whole door!

9. The garage door has weatherstripping on the bottom and the outside of the door!

10. It is best to maintain your garage door once a year at least!

11. There are hundreds of garage door companies out there, so try to pick the one that treats you right

Galvanized or Oil Tempered Springs

Pictured above is a galvanized steel torsion spring, we used to install the galvanized torsion springs. We found that they weren't lasting as long as the oil tempered springs, so we only install the oil tempered torsion springs now.

To keep you springs running smoothly we recommend spraying them with some WD-40 at least once a year. The springs bears the weight of the garage door, the opener pushes and pulls the garage door up and down. Garage door springs have a tendency to break during extreme weather changes. And when you have two springs, they will usually break one at a time, but we recommend changing both at the same time because if you only change one the other is going to break soon after.

Rollup Garage Door

This customer is located in an area that is seeing a lot of crime. The crime is the windows are being broken out in the building by a disgruntled customer on a daily basis. The owner decided to protect all of the glass in the building with roll up garage doors. These doors were a custom commercial job, special order doors, and some stucco work done by Creative Stucco!

Commercial Garage Door Springs

Pictured here is a commercial garage door spring. This spring is broke in the center and will need to be replaced. Commercial springs are made from a heavier duty steel so they have the ability to assist in lifting a large commercial garage door like the one pictured below:

The commercial garage door torsion spring is generally a two spring setup on large commercial garage doors. The size of the spring can vary as well as the cycles of use. The commercial garage door spring can have a cycle life of up 25,000 cycles.

Torsion garage door springs are wound with tension and special tools. The springs are wound 1 full revolution per foot height of the garage door. For example, if the garage door is 7 foot tall, the garage door needs to be wound seven full revolutions and the garage door is wound in quarters. We do not recommend changing any garage door springs yourself. Get a professional to do it, the springs can cause bodily harm if you do not have the right tools for the job!

We MUST be popular!

As I check around the internet, I think to myself (Grove City Garage Door) must be popular! When I look up grove city garage door on Google, Bing, and Yahoo; I find many of our competitors using our trademarked name. This is causing our customers to be confused on who the heck to call!

I have done a couple of searches on Bing and Yahoo to show everyone just how popular our competitors think we are and how much of a battle it is to use our own freaking name on searches! It's a tough market to compete with your own name on the internet searches. But be careful on who you are really calling. Some of our competitors are SHADY characters!

One of our competitors were nice enough to even verify an ad listing on Yahoo for us! We cannot fix the ad and have contacted Yahoo several time with promises that it would be fixed in 6-8 weeks! It has still not been fixed. See the example below:
Yahoo listed a wrong number
So just as a warning from someone going through this on a daily basis, research companies before just calling them. We have had some customers scammed from this problem in the past and recently. We only want to make sure our customers are getting the best service possible from the correct Grove City Garage Door Inc.!
