Elfie helps with a garage door

Note: No Elves were hurt during this event.

Elfie is trapped under a garage door because the down force on the garage door was set too high and the safety sensors were useless! The down force on any garage door is controlled by the garage door opener. If the force is set too high the safety sensors will not be able to tell the garage door to go back up when something is in front of the sensors. In order to make sure your family is safe from this happening, call a professional to check out your garage door and opener to ensure the down force is not set too high.

Today is Elfie's last day as the safety elf, he will be returning to the north pole until next year! Thank you Elfie for helping Grove City Garage Door Inc teach others about garage door safety!

This Week Holiday Schedule

Grove City Garage Door Inc. holiday schedule:

Thursday, December 25, Closed to spend time with family

Friday, December 26, open for business.

Elfie and the Spring

Elfie what are your doing?!!! That's a torsion spring and it is serious business! You cannot adjust a torsion spring with a screw driver Elfie, you could get hurt! Torsion springs take special tools for adjustments, don't be like Elfie; call the professionals to adjust or change the torsion spring!

The standard torsion spring on a garage is under tension, the torsion spring assists the garage door opener in opening and closing the garage door. Garage door springs are wound according to the height of the garage door. So if you have a seven foot tall garage door the spring is wound seven times. The garage door spring is made of metal and can break at any time for any reason.

Elfie Helps With Nylon Rollers

Elfie is helping install some nylon rollers on a garage door. Nylon rollers roll smoothly, and make the garage door operate quietly. Grove City Garage Door Inc. uses nylon rollers on all of our garage door installs and repairs. Rollers on a garage door do not need to be replaced all of the time, only when they are not operating correctly any longer. The roller can get  tears in the nylon which can cause the roller to stop rolling smoothly. If your rollers don't run smoothly the door can get our of alignment. We can check your rollers at any time we are at your home for a service call to ensure your garage door is operating at the optimal level. Our service calls are $79.00, we check out the garage door, oil and adjust the door, and ensure your garage door is operating at an optimal level!

Elfie the Safety Elf

Elfie the Safety elf is riding along with Mark until Christmas. Elfie will be showing us some safety on garage doors, how Grove City Garage Door Inc. operates, and just some things to avoid bodily injury on your garage door. Follow Elfie on Facebook this week and next week until Christmas. Once Christmas gets here Elfie will have to return to the North Pole until next Christmas season!

Elfie is showing how Grove City Garage Door Inc. recycles old garage doors, openers, and springs. Don't be like Elfie, stay out of the recycling trailer, it's not safe in there! There are plenty of places to get cut on old metal! Grove City Garage Door Inc. recycles all of these items so they do not end up in the land fill!

Saving and Recycling

Grove City Garage Door Inc. saves and recycles old garage doors. When we remove a garage door from a home or commercial building we do not throw the garage door away to be hauled off to the dump. We recycle all of the old damaged garage doors. If a garage door has some undamaged panels then we will save the garage door. There are some old garage doors that are no longer being made on some of our customers' homes that we still have panels for just in case they need a damaged panel replaced.

Marketing Online

Recently Mark was asked a question about marketing and whether or not we use Angie's List. To answer this question, we have a free listing on Angie's List. We are not an Angie's List member because we don't want to shell out lots of money on advertising on multiple websites. We shell out our advertising money on our own website. Angie's List does charge businesses to read their reviews, and use their site, so we do not use it. We do not pay a marketing person to update the website, I do all of the updating. Grove City Garage Door Inc. is a small business and if you paid to be on every single website out there, you would lose money rather than make money.

Every website out there is trying to make money in some way, shape, or form just the same as any search engine. Search engines make money through advertising money.

How a business pays through advertising money:
*purchase of a domain name costs a subscription fee every year to two years depending upon the package you get.
*Web hosting packages cost money to design a website, the web host pays the search engine.
*Getting your website higher in rankings can require some pay to click advertising with Google, Yahoo, and Bing
*We purchase business cards
*We purchase stickers to put on garage doors

Free Advertising:
*Word of Mouth! Word of Mouth comes from satisfied customers!
*Customers that link to our website, and leave reviews for us help with advertising.

The best advertising we receive is the compliment of our customers! When our customers recommend us to another that is the ultimate advertising! Word of Mouth works the best, when a customer is satisfied they are most likely to tell 3-4 of their friends. When a customer is not satisfied they are most likely to tell 10 or more people of their dissatisfaction. Grove City Garage Door Inc. tries it's best to satisfy every customer to get the 3-4 word of mouth referrals every single time! We love getting reviews from our customers and love knowing we did a great job! Thanks to all of our customers, we have been prosperous and have the ability to survive in these turbulent times!

So if you are a customer, leave a review, link to your favorite, and tell others about your favorite business. In the end the customers are the driving force of advertising!

Outer Weatherstrip

The garage door has a weatherstrip on the outside of the garage door. This weatherstrip helps to keep out the elements from coming around the garage door. Pictured above is a white garage door with brown weatherstrip. This weatherstrip matches the trim on the rest of the house. We can also math the weatherstrip to the color of the garage door.

Black Iron Hardware

Black Iron Hardware on a garage door adds a certain umpf to your garage door! The handles of the hardware are actually functional and can be used to lift the garage door from the outside if necessary. With most every garage door having an opener on the inside, the hardware is now used to dress up a garage door. This is a low cost option to add to your garage door. If you want just the functional handles to be added to your door, we can do that to. Just give us a call to find out how much our black iron hardware is installed for.

The above pictured garage door is a Clopay Gallery series garage door, long panel, with walnut ultra-grain, and Arch 1 & 2 windows.

Helpful information about garage door springs

The garage door torsion spring is located above the garage door. Pictured above is a torsion spring setup. The garage door springs are two springs above the garage door or one spring depending upon the size of the garage door. There are also extension springs that have a different setup. Extension springs are ran on the side of the track. The torsion spring setup is the most common setup of garage door springs. Pictured above is a pair of garage door springs that are in good working order. If you look closely at the picture you will find the emergency pull string for the garage door opener and the attachment from the opener shaft to the garage door. If your spring is broke we recommend pulling the emergency garage door opener string and opening the garage door by lifting the door. The garage door opener can also become damaged if the opener is used on a broken spring. The garage door spring assists the garage door opener in lifting the garage door. The garage door spring has a lot of tension on it and it is not recommended to try to fix this yourself.

Weatherstrip

Every garage door has a bottom weatherstrip which helps to prevent the outside weather from coming inside. If you see light at the bottom of your garage door there is a good chance you need to have the weatherstrip changed or your garage door adjusted. Keep water from collecting at the bottom of your garage door also, the water can freeze in cold temperatures, and your garage door will not open easily if it is frozen to the ground. Eventually the freezing of water under a garage door can wear out an opener too. When you open the garage door just take a broom to the entrance and clear out the water, snow, or debris to keep your garage door operating correctly!

If you want us to take a look at your weatherstrip or adjust your garage door just give us a quick call! The service call is $79.00, and while we are there we will assess your garage door to make sure it is operating correctly! Grove City Garage Door Inc.: 614-877-0350

Garage Door Springs

Garage door springs have a tendency to break during the colder months of the year. The colder weather will aide in the spring breaking in two. On a two car garage there are two springs above the garage door unless you have extension springs. Extension springs run along the track from the back of the track to the front of the track. If you have Wayne Dalton springs, they are located above the garage door in a tube. We do not install Wayne Dalton springs, however we will change your Wayne Dalton spring set up to a standard spring set up. A Wayne Dalton change over is known as a spring conversion. A one car garage has one spring located above the garage door. We also install commercial garage door springs.

We DO NOT recommend changing the garage door springs yourself, without the proper tools a spring can cause serious bodily harm.

We DO recommend that if one spring breaks to get both springs changed at that time. It is inevitable that the other spring will break soon.

Tuesday, November 18, 2014

Oh the weather outside is so delightful!

As the weather turns cold and the snow starts to fall, don't forget to winterize your garage door.

The weatherstrip on the outside of the door should be checked and replaced if the weatherstrip is cracked or broken. The outside weatherstrip can let in cold air around the door.

The weatherstrip on the bottom of the door should be replaced. The bottom weatherstrip will also let cold air in around the bottom of the garage door. Also keep ice and snow clear of the bottom of the garage door, this will help the door not to freeze to the ground. The opener pulling the garage door open from being frozen to the ground can cause the garage door springs to break.

Cold temperatures means that the garage door spring may break. Extreme temperature changes can cause damage to garage door springs.

Also you should not see any kind of light from underneath of your closed garage door. If you are seeing light, you could need a new weatherstrip or a garage door adjustment.

Give us a quick call for a weatherization of your garage door. $79.00 is money well spent, and while we are there we can recommend any other repairs that are needed to keep your garage door functioning correctly this whole winter.

Garage Door Opener Range

Did you know that a CFL and LED bulb can greatly reduce the garage door opener range? Are you having difficulty opening your garage door from a distance and cannot figure out what is wrong?

The garage door opener has a stand by feature that shuts off the light bulbs and reduces the amount of electricity being used. So you can keep a regular bulb in your garage door opener and not be worried about how much power it is using.

Garage Door Opener Safety Sensors

Happy Monday Grove City Garage Door Fans!

I received a phone call on Friday about garage door openers and safety sensors, the person who called could not believe that you could not install safety sensors on an old garage door opener. You cannot install safety sensors on any garage door opener made before 1992. Here's some history!

In 1992 the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a rule that started January 1, 1993, all automatic garage door openers made after this date has to have safety sensors. This rule went into effect because children were being killed by a garage door that would not stop once it was activated to close. Read the rule for yourself:Rule on Garage Door Openers

At Grove City Garage Door Inc., we will NOT add safety sensors to old garage door openers even if they are in good operation. We will NOT recommend doing this either, we also do NOT recommend by-passing the garage door safety sensors. If we come to a home that has by passed the garage door safety sensors we will put the sensors back to the correct position on the garage door. The safety sensors are located on the garage door track and should be 6 inches from the floor.

See more about garage door safety:  Garage Door Safety

We DO recommend updating your garage door opener if it was manufactured before 1992.

Do NOT by pass your safety sensors: This picture shows safety sensors hanging from the opener facing each other, this is UNSAFE! This garage door will come down without stopping because the safety sensors are by-passed. This garage door could kill an animal or small child! We DO NOT recommend by-passing your safety sensors!

Trademarking!

Hello All Grove City Garage Door Inc. Fans! I am Tracy Fairchild (Mark Rothwell's girlfriend) and the website/advertising administrator of Grove City Garage Door Inc.

Today I would like to cover a topic that no one seems to really understand: Trademarking!

What is a trademark? A trademark is a string of words, a logo, or both that a corporation is claiming as their claim to fame! For example: McDonalds, Wendys, White Castle, Gas Monkey Garage,  etc., well you get the picture are all trademarks of corporations with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. These corporations have the legal right to sue if you try to use their trademark for any kind of advertising or use without authorization.

Grove City Garage Door is a trademarked string of words with the United States Patent and Trademark Office also. Grove City Garage Door Inc. owns this trademark and has the right to protect the trademark in a court of law.

Check for yourself: USTPO Trademark Search

Why Trademark? Grove City Garage Door Inc. decided to trademark the term Grove City Garage Door when we seen 5-6 other companies using that term to advertise for their own company. We tried to ask Google to remove the offenders from the Pay to Click advertising and got a big fat NO! Google will not remove the offending Pay to Click ad using the term Grove City Garage Door because it was not trademarked with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Google will not remove the offenders that have went out and created websites. So now we have to hire an IP Lawyer to start getting some of the websites removed from the indexes.

Trademark Process: The trademark process is not a short process, it could take 6 months to a year to get your trademark approved by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. First step is to search the USTPO website to see if anyone owns your trademark. If no one owns the trademark the next step is to decide if you have a logo to trademark or just words. We went with just words in 2011. We filed our claim, paid our fees, and waited for an answer. The USTPO office contacted us to ask questions about our trademark, how long we had been using the trademark, and proof of the length of time. You see there are two kinds of trademarks: Intent to use in commerce and use in commerce. Intent to use means that someday you intend to use the trademark in commerce, you have to start using the trademark within 3-5 years after approval. Use in commerce means that you have used the trademark for more than 5 years, since we have been using the trademark since 1999 this qualified for more than 5 years. The USTPO lawyer approved our application for trademark and sent it out for a 30 day period of petition. Petition time means that anyone has the right to file a petition as to why the trademark should not be given or approved. If no one submits a petition against your trademark application then your trademark will be approved and go live.

Trademark Protection: Absolutely no one will protect your trademark! Many companies will try to use your trademark while advertising! What can you do? You can contact a lawyer to have this lawyer send out cease and desist letters. Once a cease and desist letter goes out, then you can file a police report for cyber harassment. You CANNOT file a police report without first sending out the cease and desist letter, the offenders have to be warned to stop. Then the next step would be to spend tons of money with lawyers and courts proving that the offending company used your mark without authorization. I don't know about you, but we are NOT in the lawyer paying business, we are in the garage door business!

Creative Trademark Protection: Currently we are searching for other ways to protect our trademark online. We are investigating a few companies that say they have a solution to remove offending websites from Google indexes. But of course there are fees involved! We do contact offending companies ourselves first, and if they will not comply then we have to get our lawyer involved. We prefer that the offending companies comply willingly because as I have said, we are NOT in the lawyer business! We have found some argumentative website management companies in the process who either do not understand trademarks or just do not do their research about trademarks. Grove City Garage Door Inc. has the sole ownership of the term Grove City Garage Door and we do have the legal right to sue any unauthorized use of our trademark in a court of law!

Grove City Garage Door Inc. does NOT practice using any other companies' name or trademark in our advertising. I do research the trademark website frequently so that we can avoid being sued for using someone's trademark. I also do not want to confuse our customers in our advertising, I want to grow our customer base through advertising correctly and form a trusting relationship with our customer base. Be creative! Use your own company name, build your own customer base, quit trying to steal ours!

Importance of Data Entry

How important is data entry for advertising?

When we advertise with a website it is important to data entry the correct phone number, email address, and email address. How else would our customers know who to contact?

We have a couple of places that we advertise that we pay a membership fee to advertise with them. Last month we had a magazine that was published with our advertisement in this magazine, what did we find? We found that the person that input our contact information put in a phone number that did not exist. So when customers try to reach out to us the phone number is bogus! This is why it is extremely important that when a person data entries your information to make sure it is correct. This was a one time  occurrence that we are not sure if this occurred on several other occasions! Common mistakes such as these can slowly deteriorate a customer base! Customers will call the bad numbers and instead of thinking that someone could have made a mistake, that customer is lost!

The company that we had a membership to does not seem to understand that we will not be joining their organization for another year after we had found mistakes like the wrong number two years in a row, last year it was our website address and this year it was our phone number. We do not want to affiliate ourselves with organizations that continually make these kinds of mistakes that could possibly cost us customers. It is extremely important that when you are entering a business advertisement to make sure it is correct! No business wants to lose a customer due to mistakes of others!

Safety in Mind

At Grove City Garage Door Inc., we are always thinking of what we could possibly blog about on a daily basis. There are only so many components to a garage door! Today we will touch on some garage door safety!

When you are home don't leave your garage door open and unattended, why you ask?
-Criminals are always thinking of ways to get the next job, and an open garage door left unattended is inviting criminals in to inspect your garage.

What are they looking for?
-Easy access to you home! If you do not own a car that has a garage door opener in the overhead part of your vehicle then you probably own a remote you have attached to your sun visor. This remote is easily stolen when a garage door is left open and unattended!

How to avoid your remote being stolen:
-Close your garage door and do not leave it open or unattended!
-Get a key chain remote for your vehicle!
-Program you overhead remotes to your garage!
-Take your keys and remote inside with you!

We offer key chain remotes and can program them to up to 3 garage door openers!

Just give us a call, we can set this remote to just about any garage door opener or gate!

Temperature Affect

As the month of October gets into full swing so do the temperatures! As temperatures swing from high to low, there are different effects the temperatures have on garage door parts.

The springs are most affected by the swinging temperatures! The metal can withstand only so much before it just gives out. The constant up and down from raising and lowering the garage door causes the metal in the springs to wear out over time and use, then temperatures cause the springs to expand and contract with temperature fluctuation. The expansion and contraction of the metal from swinging temperatures will cause the springs to just suddenly break, so on a particularly cold morning don't be surprised if you look up and your spring in broken in two pieces. We recommend not using your garage door with a broken spring since this can cause the door to be heavier and the opener will struggle opening the garage door. And if both springs have broken, this will most likely cause the opener to become damaged if you try to open the garage door. We always recommend changing both springs once one has broken. Why you ask? Well it is only a matter of time before the other spring will break. Could be a day, a week, a month, but it will be soon after the first one breaks. So get a preventative maintenance and replace both at the same time!

Our pricing is very competitive, just give us a call for pricing on spring repairs!

Multiple Domain Names

There are often times when people ask why we never bought the multiple domain names of our company?

Well for starters back in 1998 when the Internet was still in it's infancy stages, there was no need to buy all of the possible names of our company such as .net, .org, .us, .co, and plural spellings of the same. Back in 1998 the Internet was new, computers were not in every one's homes, and there were not smart phones! So we did not see the need to spend much money on Internet marketing.

Since those years have passed, we still never bought into all of those extra extensions because we have a great reputation and a word of mouth business from working hard, having low prices, and keeping our customers happy! Our word of mouth business is still to our advantage even to this day! There is not a single day that goes by that someone calls and says my dad, mom, aunt, uncle, cousin, friend, or co-worker referred your company to me. So THANK YOU to all of our wonderful customers that pass us on to others, we would not be here if it weren't for you!

As for still not buying all of those extensions? At this point why bother? Now the persons who do own those other extensions of my company name are in NO WAY affiliated with Grove City Garage Door Inc., those people are impersonating our company to steal our customers from us!

So please check out their credentials before letting them do any work. If it's not myself,  my brother Pat, or my contract employee Mike Writsell at your door then send them away if they say they are Grove City Garage Door! Now you can find us both on Facebook: Mark Rothwell and Pat Rothwell, you can also find Grove City Garage Door Inc on Facebook! Find us, be our friends, leave reviews, tell us how we are doing! We love to hear from our customers!

Protecting your Trademark

Trademark:

Why is getting a Trademark important to a business? Well for one thing there are no protections on the internet from other people using your corporation name. We went through the process of getting our corporation name trademarked a few years ago because we were running into issues with other companies using our name to steal our customer base, confuse our customers, and make our reputation look bad. So we got into the process of trademarking Grove City Garage Door, this is a six month to a year process.

And what does a trademark do for your company you ask? Well with Google, Bing, and Yahoo no other company can use your trademark as a title on their pay to click ads. You can turn the offenders in to Google, Bing, and Yahoo by filling out the trademark complaint forms online.

What will they stop? The direct Heading Title use of the wording of your trademark.

What will they not stop? The use of your trademark as a keyword, any use of the words that closely resemble your trademark, and if you get a customer service rep that does not agree with you; turn it in again. Keep trying and be persistent!

Google Trademark Complaint

Bing/Yahoo Trademark Complaint

 Searching the internet:

This past weekend we were enjoying a relaxing weekend, doing some internet searching, and checking out our trademarked name in search results. We do a daily search of our trademark name for the simple reason of seeing how we are ranking on the mobile version and on the computers. See who is trying to use our name, and see what our customers are seeing. Well we stumbled across a new website using our name in their title and on their website.

Stopping Offenders:

1. Look at the offending website and try to determine if it gives a company name or not. In this case they were using this name: Grove City Garage Door Service as their company name. Of course we all know that this is my company name with the word service added to the end.

2. Look up the domain name registry: Whois Registry Lookup

3. If it's not private, which Google, Bing, and Yahoo do not like: figure out the name of the person who owns the website, and who their hosting provider is.

4. Search that name on the internet with related keywords such as in this case: garage doors. What might you find? We found this person, their Facebook page, and other contact information.

5. Email the offending person first explaining that you have a term trademarked, show proof of trademark, and ask the offender to remove all instances of the term from their website, title, etc. If they comply then GREAT! You do not have to get a lawyer involved. In this particular case, these people acted like "catch me if you can".

6. Contact your lawyer if they will not comply with you. Pay your retainer fee (we have a lawyer on full time retainer), ask the lawyer to get involved with a phone call, a cease and desist letter, and wait. If the offender will not comply with the lawyer, then you will have to pay more lawyer fees and take it to court! Which sucks the life out of your business with unwarranted costs! Just because some person cannot be creative and develop their own business name!

What do trademark offenders do with using your name?
People who use other companies' trademark or name on their website are trying to confuse customers of these companies. They are preying on unsuspecting people, and then they will sell your contact information to other companies. They will come to your home pretending to be the company you thought you called, make repairs, or sell you stuff you do not need.

What does this do to a company?
A trademark offender will use a company name, make sales to customers using said name, and ruin a reputation of a company! We have had to deal with this in the past, and what happened? We get a phone call from someone who said that they called Grove City Garage Door, we get there and low and behold it was not myself or my brother Pat that was there. It was some no name trademark offender pretending to be Grove City Garage Door! We do not honor their work and the customer may or may not get irate!

Make Sure of Who You Are Dealing with:
If you think you called and scheduled an appointment with a company, when the company arrives at your home, check the signage on their vehicle, shirt, etc. If it does not match who you think you called, then send them away! If they ask you to make a check out to Joe Blow Service Company and not the company you think you called, then send them away!

Why does this upset us?
As a business owner, I try to be fair, honest, and truthful with all of our customers. We have a reputation to protect as a business, and we do not want some Joe Blow Service Company ruining our business in any way shape or form. We have busted our butts for the past 16 years establishing our business name and trademark! GET YOUR OWN BUSINESS NAME! There were days in the beginning of our business that we scraped by, did not get a paycheck, and struggled to get our name out there as a business. Trademark offenders and people who steal other business names to get ahead in this world just get my blood boiling............BE CREATIVE AND MAKE YOUR OWN BUSINESS NAME WORK! I did it! YES USING ANOTHER COMPANIES' NAME IS STEALING!

Summer Slips Away

As summer is slowing starting to slip away in 2014 and the seasons start to change, you may notice some changes in your garage door as well. What changes you ask?

In some cases where the garage door is facing the west, the garage door may give you some trouble in closing. Why? Well it has been our experience that when the sun sits at a certain height in the sky that it reflects directly into the sensors on the garage door opening. When the sun shines into those sensors, the sensors think something is blocking the garage door opening and sends the garage door right back up. What can you do to prevent this from occurring? You can adjust your sensors a little by the wing nut on the top of the sensor. If you sensor is out of adjustment, it will blink; just adjust the sensor until the blinking stops.

The other changes that happen when the seasons change is that the metal springs above the garage door are sensitive to temperature changes. So if you have a garage door spring that is older or at it's last bit of cycles, the temperature changes could cause the metal to snap and your garage door will not open. If you look above your garage door and see that your spring has snapped in two, do not try to open the garage door with the opener, this will cause the opener to wear out quickly. Garage door openers are not made the same any longer and have plastic gears inside which wear quickly if used during a break of the garage door spring.

What can you do during the season changes? Have your garage door adjusted, oiled, and looked at for possible problems. One sign that your garage door is out of alignment is if you see light at the bottom of your garage door while the door is in the closed position. The light could mean two things, the garage door is out of alignment or the weather strip needs replaces. Either way you will need to have your garage door adjusted. Why have it adjusted? Adjusting a garage door lengthens the life of the garage door springs and opener.

If you don't want to have a professional oil your door, you can do it yourself. Grab a can of WD40 and spray the rollers, garage door springs, and all of the metal components on the inside of the garage door. WD40 is also great for removing dirt and debris off of the garage door. Just spray the WD40 on the dirt and wipe away with a towel. It is recommended to oil your garage door at least once a year to lengthen the life of the components of the garage door.

Need to have your door adjusted? Just give us a quick call to make an appointment. We charge $79.00 for a service call! That service call includes an oil and adjustment, a complete inspection of your garage door, and if we find anything wrong during the service visit we will let you know immediately what is needed to fix your garage door.

Google Verified

Do you do a search on Google for most of your home needs etc? Have you seen many companies that do not show an address on their Google Business page? Or it just says Columbus, Ohio? Ever wondered how they were verified?

Grove City Garage Door Inc. asks the same questions all the time about Google verified businesses! We had to go through great lengths to get verified and have telemarketers call us all the time to say we are not verified when we actually are verified! One way to tell if a business is verified, the business will have a green check mark on their Google Places page that says they are verified. How do you get verified? Well you set up your Google Places account, have Google send out a post card with a verification number, and once you enter that number into your Google Places account; you are then a verified merchant on Google Places.

We have seen instances of businesses that were claiming to be at one location, got verified somehow, and it is difficult to get them unverified. How is this fair to real businesses that use Google Places as an avenue to advertise their business? So consumers be careful while shopping on the internet, there are businesses that practice unscrupulously to get your business. Those businesses may or may not be a local company, and they could be scamming you. So do your homework and check out a business before hiring them to work on your home. We have seen some cases where a garage door company was hired to put up a new garage door opener and has come back at a later time to rob the customer.

Measuring your Opening

Not every garage door opening was created equal! This is why we have to measure every single opening for each and every job. The construction company has a specification to follow when constructing a home, does this mean that they could measure wrong? Of course! We have found that if we decide to not measure each opening that leads to problems. The door may not fit in height or width of the opening. An opening could be off three or more inches which makes a difference of what size door would fit in the opening and look correct as well as protect the entire opening. Weatherstripping does not make up for a wrongly measured opening. Ordering a door that is the wrong size will of course end up on our clearance garage door page. Clearance Garage Doors

Buying a Garage Door

Buying a garage door for your home can be a tough choice! There are many styles, steel thicknesses, wood variations, and insulation values to choose from.

Here are some questions to ask yourself:
1. What do I want out of my garage door?
2. Is my garage heated and cooled?
3. What is my budget?
4. Do I want steel or wood?
5. What is the maintenance of steel and wood?
6. What color do I want on my home?
7. Do I need a lock?
8. Will I need to upgrade my opener?
9. How do I choose a company to perform the services?
10. Do I want windows in my garage door?

At Grove City Garage Door Inc., we understand that buying a new garage door can be a tough choice. We have many selections to choose from and can help. We will try our best to help over the phone or in person.

If you are just fishing around the internet here are some definitions to help you choose the right garage door for your home:

Insulation: Garage doors come in insulated and non-insulated varieties. There are foam backer inserts for insulation (not recommended), polystyrene, and polyurethane. Polystyrene is the most common of insulation in a garage door (recommended), and polyurethane is a heavier insulation (also recommended). Insulation is a great way to keep your garage at cooler temperatures and warmer temperatures especially if your garage is heated or cooled.

Wood: There are manufacturers of traditional wood door such as Clopay. We are a dealer for Clopay so we can get a wood door at your request. A wood door does require maintenance and may not be within a budget. Wood doors can be expensive and hard to take care of. If you are choosing a wood door, be prepared to stain the wood door every year. A wood door is also heavier and may require a commercial opener with heavy duty springs.

Composite: A composite door is a door that has a steel undercarriage and a wood overlay glued to the outside of the steel to make the door look like wood. A composite door requires less maintenance than a wood door, but still give the look of a wood door.

Steel: A classic steel garage door can come insulated or non-insulated. Steel garage doors also come from the factory painted with your choice of color. Steel garage doors are available in short and long panel, with windows or without and are low maintenance. A steel garage door only requires a once a year adjust and oil to make the garage door operate smoothly from year to year.

Aluminum: An aluminum door is recommended in high humidity and caustic environments, the material is rust proof and corrosion resistant. An aluminum door goes well on a coastal home that is exposed to the elements. You can put in a full view glass panels for a modern look on your home.

Windows: Windows in a garage door can add light to the garage, and a distinctive look to any garage! Windows are also insulated, can be frosted or not frosted, and have many different inserts available for a different look!

Color: Garage doors come in many different colors ranging from a traditional white to a wood look of oak! It is up to you on how you want your home to look: contemporary, modern, or traditional!

Black Garage Door Color

Do you remember a time when garage door only came in one color? We do! Garage doors used to have to be painted to get a desired color. Now there are so many color options to choose from! There are regular colors and wood looking colors in steel garage doors. Now there is a new color on the market! Clopay has developed a Black color that is cool to the touch!

Normally a black color would absorb the sun's heat and make the entire door hot! Clopay's new color does not absorb the heat of the sun and actually reflects the heat making the door cooler to the touch. The black color is also going to be on a thicker gauge steel garage door, giving more protection to your garage!

We have had many people ask about a black garage door but never commit to buying one. Take your chances on a unique garage door color for your home! Black Garage Door PDF

Google Ranking

Figuring out Google ranking is a tough thing to do! One day the blog is on the first page, then then next it's on the second page, and so on. If we don't write anything for a couple of days, the blog falls to the third or fourth page! How does Google ranking really work? No one really knows the true answer to that question. We just keep plugging away at posting and updating to keep our ranking up! Our main page at www.grovecitygaragedoor.com stays on the top, we believe because our domain name has been on the internet since the internet was first established (14 years)! It doesn't seem like it's been that long since the internet has been around and man how it has developed into something entirely different than what it once was.

Now you pick up a smart phone, look up what you need, and get a map instantly! Have you tried to look up something important? Do you get frustrated that you cannot find what you are looking for? We have found that on the internet, the first two websites at the top of your search are pay to click ads by people who want you to consider them first. Are they relevant to your needs? Most likely not! We have found that the third or fourth website is usually what you are truly looking for past the pay to click advertising. The pay to click advertisers are using keywords to make their ad come up first on a page that may not even be closely related to what they sell or what you are buying. Do your homework on companies before committing to buying.

If you want to look up a company based in Ohio search here: Business Search

Look up their federal trademark: USTPO Trademark Search

Companies that have been in business for a long period of time are not hiding information. Companies register in the state they do business in and if they have been around for a long time they will usually register their trademarked name so that others cannot use it.

Raising awareness about IVDD

Have you ever heard of IVDD? IVDD is intervertebral disc disease in dogs. This is also referred to as a slipped disc. The disc gets herniated/slipped in the back of the dog and presses on the spinal cord causing problems with the back. I have a Beagle at home that is suffering from IVDD in his lower back, which has paralyzed him in the hind end, and he also has not control over his bladder or bowels. IVDD can happen in any breed of dog but seems to be more common in dogs with longer backs. We have opted for crate rest for the healing process, which is up to 8 weeks. There are other options such as surgery, but surgeries for dogs are very expensive. An MRI at OSU veterinary clinic starts at $2000.00 and the surgery starts at $3500.00, and both could be more depending on the situation and the dog.

We have never heard of IVDD until our dog, Linus, came in Sunday evening and could barely walk. So we rushed him to the ER to find out that he has a slipped disc in his back. By the time we got him home he was unable to walk on his own or control his bladder or bowels. Monday he was in a lot of pain even with the pain medication, Tuesday the pain has decreased some, and this morning his pain is becoming manageable. Linus is showing signs of movement in his legs, so we are hopeful that the 8 weeks of crate rest will result in a full recovery.

If you have never heard of this disease in dogs, please make yourself aware; IVDD Information

In order to care for a dog with IVDD, you have to be aware that you will have to do things that are not comfortable, smelly, and disgusting. Read up on what to do for an handicapped dog: Handicapped Pets; express bladder, Handicapped pets; express bowels

Mid-America Garage Doors

Not many people have heard about Mid-America Garage Doors. Why you ask? Well Mid-America is located in Ponca City, Oklahoma; so they are not a local company. So why does Grove City Garage Door Inc. sell their doors? We sell their doors because they have outstanding quality. Mid-America offers a different kind of garage door because the thickness of the metal is heavier gauged and will stand up to more accidental abuse. A Mid-America door is thicker metal so that also means that there is more noise reduction.

Mid-America also offers an inexpensive carriage style garage door. Since carriage style garage doors is a growing trend in the garage door market.  Mid-America Garage Doors

Mid-America offers the standard colors: white, almond, grey, sandtone, sahara, and cherry (wood) look on their doors. Check out our page above for more information regarding the varieties of garage doors.

Garage Door Locks

There are 3 types of garage door locks found on a garage door; inside lock, lock bar, and autolatch.

An inside lock is the most common kind of garage door lock. The inside lock is square and has a latch that pushes through the garage door track, and you can only lock it from the inside of the garge door. The inside lock is the most secure way to lock your garage door.

A lock bar is an outside lock that has bars on the inside of the garage door that goes through the track. This kind of lock uses a key on the outside of the garage door and was most commonly used in the 70's and 80's. This lock has an outside handle that locks with a key.

An autolatch is has two flippers on the inside and there is a piece of metal mounted on the track that it goes into on both sides of the track. The autolatch uses a key from the outside to lock and unlock, this is the safest outside lock device on a garage door.

Grove City Garage Door Inc. recommends that if you are going to use a locking device to use an inside lock. If you have a Chamberlain, LiftMaster, or Linear opener you do not need a locking device. If you have a inexpensive garage door opener you will need a locking device, because we have found that the inexpensive openers may or may not lock when the door is in the down position.

Weatherstripping

At Grove City Garage Door Inc. we carry all of the colors of weatherstripping for every color of door available with Clopay, Mid-America, and DoorLink. We can match any color of door with weatherstripping, so there is no need to paint weatherstripping.

If you are unfamiliar where the weatherstripping is located on your garage door, go outside and face your garage door. The weatherstripping is attached to the garage door frame around the garage door.
In the above picture the garage door is white and the weatherstripping is an almond color, the reason the weatherstripping is an almond color is the windows in this house are also almond colored. So we matched the weatherstripping with the rest of the exterior coloring of the home.

Weatherstripping provides protection around the garage door to help keep the elements out of the garage. Without weatherstripping, the wind would come around the sides of the garage door. We install each piece of weatherstripping around the garage door by securely nailing each piece six inches apart with penny nails.

There is also weatherstripping on the bottom of every garage door that can be damaged over the years by the weather. Bottom weatherstripping can become damaged from being stuck to the ground during the winter months when there is ice, and can also become damaged by mice. If you see light under your garage door from the inside while the door is closed, this could mean two things: either the garage door is out of adjustment or the weatherstripping needs replaced. We carry a large roll of bottom weatherstripping on our truck for repairs, so just ask if we are doing a repair to your door if you need your weatherstripping replaced. We will check it out for you while we are there! If you are seeing light under your garage door, have us come out for a service call to check the door adjustment or the weatherstripping!

Identification

When you are browsing the internet, do you question the identification of a company? Have you ever had a service man pull up to your home in a car or truck that does not clearly identify the company? Do their shirts have a name of the company on it? Does the service person clearly identify themselves and their company?

At Grove City Garage Door Inc., we clearly identify all of our vehicles and wear shirts that identify our organization. We do not have magnets that are stuck to the side of our trucks or vans. We make sure we clearly identify who we are on the phone, in person, and on the internet. Why you ask? Well for one, there are companies out there that will use our company name and scam you. We have had other companies try to confuse our customers on the internet and in person by using a variation of our name.

Mark Rothwell answers the phone, "Grove City Doors, this is Mark" every time he answers the phone. Our phone message tells exactly who we are, our hours, and what we do. Our trucks and vans display our name clearly, and we buy modern up to date equipment all the time. We don't drive broken down junk vehicles that are rusting out. In fact all of our small trucks are less than three years old, the oldest vehicle we own is the big stakebed truck simply because it's a Mitsubishi and will run for years.

Pictured is our vehicles, and our shirts:

Factory Direct or Tailgater?

Do you know the difference between a factory direct dealer and a tailgater in the garage door business?

A factory direct dealer deals directly with the company/factory that makes the garage doors, springs, and hardware.

A tailgater is a garage door company that has to buy through a distributor of garage door, springs, and hardware.

A Distributor  iis the factory authorized/direct dealer with the factory.

So what is the difference you ask?

A factory direct dealer can offer a lower price than a tailgater because a factory direct dealer does not have a middle man trying to make money from the sale. The factory direct deal goes directly to the factory to buy the goods.

How does this effect you?

As a customer you want to buy from a factory direct dealer simply because you can get the lowest pricing available. You do not have to pay a mark-up twice since a factory direct dealer gets their material direct. A tailgater pays mark-up to the distributor and then passes on the mark-up to you in the sale of the product to you. So in turn you are paying twice the amount that an item should cost.

Not all garage door companies are created equal! So look for companies that are factory direct dealers, and if they don't advertise then ask them if they are. If the company sounds vague about what you are asking or avoiding the question then they are most likely a tailgating company that buys through a distributor and will charge you additional mark-up on all of the items sold to you.

Grove City Garage Door Inc. is a factory authorized direct dealer of Clopay garage doors, Mid-America garage doors, DoorLink garage doors, LiftMaster openers (LiftMaster also makes Chamberlain openers), and Linear Openers. We buy all of our hardware from various other local factories to reduce the amount of shipping costs on the goods. So we at Grove City Garage Door Inc. can pass on substantial savings to our customers! We have the lowest prices in town because we are a factory direct dealer!

What does it take to be a factory direct dealer?

It takes good corporation credit, longevity, and long standing good relationships to be a factory direct dealer. Not just any company can become a factory direct dealer. In fact, here's a story for you on how we became a factory direct dealer of LiftMaster products: I went to garage door shows for years in the beginning to meet and greet companies at these shows. There were many garage door companies, opener companies, and hardware companies at these shows presenting their products to all of the garage door dealers. You could find the latest and greatest products, get to know the sales people, and start building relationships. Once I went to three or four years of shows and people started recognizing that my company is here to stay, I started building relationships, and I was finally able to gain the trust of many companies which lead to Grove City Garage Door Inc. becoming a factory direct dealer with LiftMaster. And once you are trusted by one company, many others start following suit! So it takes time to build relationships to get a good standing with any corporation, and at the same time you have to build your reputation in the business. Grove City Garage Door Inc. has built an outstanding reputation in the business over the years due to our customer service skills and relationship building skills! Our customers are what make us the best in the business! We treat all of our customers with respect and try to meet most of our customer demands to the best of our ability! Without our GREAT customers, Grove City Garage Door Inc. would not exist! Thank you customers for coming back and passing on our name to others!

Garage Door Hardware

There are many different pieces and parts that go into a garage door in the hardware department and the different types of hardware can determine the functioning of the garage door. Different garage door hardwares can make the garage door function quieter.

The hardware on a garage door is hinges, rollers, bottom bracket, top bracket, cables, drums, torsion shafts, bearings, bearing plates, and weatherstripping.

Types of hinges: range from 11 gauge to 18 gauge steel, the 11 gauge is a thicker hinge that is primarily used in commercial jobs, and the 18 gauge steel hinges are thinner and used in residential jobs.

Types of rollers: steel rollers with no ball bearings, steel roller with ball bearings, steel roller with nylon coating and ball bearings, and a nylon roller with no ball bearings. Nylon and steel rollers with no ball bearings are a low end least expensive roller; these are for inexpensive doors and the most common. The nylon and steel rollers with ball bearings are used on more expensive garage doors. Nylon rollers with ball bearings are the best rollers, and operate quieter.

Hardware on a garage door can wear out without proper servicing. Bearing plates, garage door rollers, bearings, and drums are the most common things to wear out on a garage door; all of these hardwares can be oiled once a year to keep your garage door hardware from wearing out. There are companies out there that will tell you that you need an overhaul kit to fix your garage door, there are no such hardware kits out there. Get your garage door serviced once a year to keep your garage door working properly. Get your garage door serviced once a year for just $79.00!

Insulation in Garage Doors

The different kinds of insulation in garage doors is polystyrene, polyurethane, and styrofoam backing. The three different insulations have different R values that can increase keeping the weather out with a higher R value.

Polyurethane: a liquid insulation that is inserted in the manufacturing process that solidifies. Polyurethane is similar to the spray foam sprayed into walls for insulation.  The R value of polyurethane ranges from 15-25. Polyurethane garage doors are more expensive than polystyrene garage doors.

Polystyrene: a styrofoam material sandwiched in between two pieces of steel. Polystyrene is how garage doors have been made for many years.

Styrofoam Backing: a styrofoam that is held onto the back of a garage door with pressure.

At Grove City Garage Door Inc., we recommend the polystyrene or the polyurethane insulated garage doors. These two insulations have the best R value for the Ohio weather, they can withstand wind load, and they are also harder to dent if you run into one.

Different Kinds of Garage Door Track:

The garage door track is the metal rails on each side of the garage that the rollers of the garage door glide up and down in when the garage door is opened or closed. Choosing track for each garage door is important because the amount of room above the garage door determines if an opener can fit. If you choose the wrong kind of track, you run the risk of the opener not having enough room to operate. In choosing the right kind of track for the garage door, it is important to measure the opening or the garage and the headroom above the garage door. The space above the garage door is known as headroom.

Low Head Track is used with minimal head room from the top of the door to the ceiling- 10" of headroom. There are two types of Low Head Track: Front Mount and Rear Mount. Front mount low head track is used if there is 6-10" of headroom. Rear mount low head track is used for 5" or less of headroom.

10" Track is used when there is less than 13" of headroom

Standard Track Sizes- Most used in residential and commercial settings:
12" Track  is used when there is less than 15" of headroom
15" Track is used when there is 16" or more of headroom

High Lift Track is used when there is more than 15" of headroom

Vertical Lift Track is used when there is an unlimited amount of headroom above the garage door. The garage door will lift straight up the wall.

Roof Pitch Track follows the pitch of the rafter and is available from 4-12 to 12-12 pitch roofs.
